Valve Regulated Lead acid Battery (Vrla Battery) is a Lead acid Battery Battery that does not require adding acid or water for maintenance. The Battery is sealed and does not leak acid or release acid fog, the battery cover is provided with a one-way exhaust valve (also called a safety valve) , which is used when the amount of gas in the battery exceeds a certain value (usually expressed as a value of air pressure) , that is, when the gas pressure inside the battery rises to a certain value, the exhaust valve opens automatically, expels the gas, and then automatically closes the valve to prevent air from entering the battery.

It was born in the 1970s. By 1975, it had formed a considerable production scale in some developed countries, and it was quickly industrialized and put on the market in large quantities. Although this kind of battery is also a lead-acid battery, it has many advantages compared with the original lead-acid battery and is very popular among users, especially those who need to install battery supporting equipment together (or in a workshop). , such as UPS, telecommunications equipment, mobile communication equipment, computers, motorcycles, etc. This is because VRLA batteries are fully sealed and will not leak acid, and when charging and discharging, they will not release acid mist like old-fashioned lead-acid batteries, which will corrode equipment and pollute the environment. The difficulty in sealing lead-acid batteries is the electrolysis of water during charging. When charging reaches a certain voltage (generally above 2.30V/cell), oxygen is released from the positive electrode of the battery and hydrogen is released from the negative electrode. On the one hand, the gas is released to bring out acid mist, which pollutes the environment. On the other hand, the water content in the electrolyte decreases, and water must be added at regular intervals for maintenance. Valve regulated lead-acid batteries are products developed to overcome these shortcomings. Its product features are:

 

(1) Use multi-element high-quality grid alloy to increase the over potential of gas release. That is, ordinary battery grid alloys release gas when the temperature is above 2.30V/cell (25℃). After using high-quality multi-component alloy, gas is released when the temperature is above 2.35V/monomer (25℃), thus relatively reducing the amount of gas release.

 

Let the negative electrode have excess capacity, that is, 10% more capacity than the positive electrode. In the later stage of charging, the oxygen released by the positive electrode contacts the negative electrode and reacts to regenerate water, that is, O2+2Pb→2PbO+2H2SO4→H2O+2PbSO4. The negative electrode is in an undercharged state due to the action of oxygen, so no hydrogen is produced. This process in which oxygen from the positive electrode is absorbed by the lead from the negative electrode and further converted into water is called cathode absorption.

 

(3) In order to allow the oxygen released by the positive electrode to flow to the negative electrode as quickly as possible, a new ultra-fine glass fiber separator must be used that is different from the microporous rubber separators used in ordinary lead-acid batteries. Its porosity is increased from 50% of the rubber separator to more than 90%, allowing oxygen to easily flow to the negative electrode and then be synthesized into water. In addition, the ultra-fine glass fiber separator has the function of adsorbing sulfuric acid electrolyte, so even if the battery is dumped, there will be no electrolyte spillage.

 

(4) Adopt a sealed valve-controlled acid filter structure to prevent acid mist from escaping to achieve safety and environmental protection.

 

During the above-mentioned cathode absorption process, since the water produced cannot overflow under seal, the valve-regulated sealed lead-acid battery can be exempted from supplementary water maintenance. This is also the reason why the valve-regulated sealed lead-acid battery is called a maintenance-free battery. However, the meaning of being maintenance-free does not mean that no maintenance is done. On the contrary, in order to increase the service life of valve-regulated sealed lead-acid batteries, there are many maintenance tasks waiting for us to do.
